Buffalo Bill State Park (47 Lakeside Rd., 307/587-9227, www.wyoparks.state.wy.us , May-Sept., $17 nonresidents), 11 miles west of Cody, offers the closest public campgrounds. Situated below the Absaroka Mountains, the park has two campgrounds: North Shore Bay Campground has 37 sites, and North Fork Campground has 62 sites.

A good, fully equipped private facility in town is the Ponderosa Campground (1815 8th St., 307/587-9203, www.codyponderosa.com , mid-Apr.-mid-Oct., $30 tents, $35-49 RVs, $31 tipis, $60 cabins for 2 people). There is a cowboy cappuccino bar, a convenience store, a playground, clean restrooms and showers, and many other amenities in this large complex.
